I recently read Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur, and I really connected with it. The book is filled with lyrical poetry, I really think anyone and everyone would benefit from reading Milk and Honey. Without further ado, here are the four main reasons you need to read Milk and Honey:

1. It's brutally honest.

Modern society has a tendency to skip over important but sensitive topics such as r*pe, sexual abuse and anxiety. Rupi Kaur does no such thing, taking care with these issues but firmly addressing their existence and relevance to everyday life. She ensures that readers understand these stories hidden in her poetry are not to be mocked and the victims are not just "attention seekers", but people who have been hurt by actions which seem to be sanctioned by those with power.

2. It's divided into four chapters, describing different stages of life everyone will go through.

The Hurting, The Loving, The Breaking, The Healing. Name one person who has not gone through these stages? Well if they haven't, they most certainly will. With poetry to fit each theme, Milk and Honey will help you address different issues, get through a rough spot, or appreciate the good parts of life. "Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache." Words from the publisher of Milk and Honey. This book will help you see the light in the dark.

3. Beautifully written poetry.

How could you not love amazing poetry? Milk and Honey features some of the most expressive poetry and prose I have read, it connects with the reader. The emotions behind the words on the page are conveyed as if they are inside your head. What makes this poetry collection stand out is the love and care behind each and every word, as if they have all been thought out with much consideration. Not every page contains long poems, but the short ones have just as much meaning.

4. The illustrations.

Rupi Kaur uses the hand drawn images in Milk and Honey to accentuate the words she writes. They are a visual representation of some of the thoughts swirling through her head as she writes such thought probing poetry. The illustrations also make the book more aesthetically pleasing, and while this may not seem like much it actually adds to how you view the book. Less as a book, more as a work of art, which is what it is.

So there you have it, my reasons you should read Milk and Honey! You can read my short review of the book here.
